When to rerun a cloud application cost assessment

Assessments age. Pricing changes, new regions, and product launches all shift the efficiency picture.

A thorough assessment is a snapshot. After a major launch, a region expansion, or a provider pricing update, last quarter’s ranking of cost drivers can mislead.

Plan a full reassessment when application count grows by roughly a third, when a new managed database family enters production, or when committed-use discounts are renegotiated. Between those events, lighter monthly advisory reviews catch drift without repeating the entire study.

Also rerun when ownership changes. A new platform lead often inherits unexplained spend; a fresh assessment creates a shared baseline rather than relying on tribal memory.

Keep the previous report. Comparing two assessments side by side shows which remediations stuck and which were undone by later releases — useful evidence for leadership in any organisation managing cloud application costs.
